There Isn't a "Better" Side—Only the Better Side for You
One of the first questions buyers ask when they begin searching for waterfront homes is:
"Should I buy on the ocean side or the bay side?"
The answer depends less on the property itself and more on how you envision spending your time on the water.
Both offer incredible experiences—but they're very different.
Living on the Ocean Side
If your weekends revolve around offshore fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, or quick access to the coral reef, the Atlantic side may be the perfect fit.
Many ocean-side canals provide shorter runs to open water, making it easy to head offshore when conditions are favorable.
The Atlantic side is often preferred by:
- Offshore anglers
- Divers
- Snorkelers
- Sailors
- Boaters who enjoy blue water adventures or trips to the Bahamas via boat
Living on the Bay Side
The bay offers a completely different lifestyle.
Calmer waters create ideal conditions for:
- Paddleboarding
- Kayaking
- Flats fishing
- Watching dolphins and manatees
- Sunset cruises
- Relaxing evenings on the dock
Many buyers are drawn to the peaceful atmosphere and spectacular sunsets over Florida Bay.
Don't Forget the Bridges
While both sides offer wonderful boating opportunities, some neighborhoods require navigating bridges to reach open water.
Bridge heights and locations may influence the type of boat you can comfortably own.
That's why understanding your boating goals is just as important as choosing the home itself.
Questions to Ask Yourself
Rather than asking,
"Which side is better?"
Ask:
- How often will I take my boat out?
- Do I prefer offshore fishing or backcountry fishing?
- Am I more excited about reefs or mangroves?
- Do I love sunrise mornings or sunset evenings?
- Will I kayak and paddleboard regularly?
- What kind of boating do I see myself enjoying five years from now?
Your answers will naturally guide you toward the right location.
Academy Tip
The best waterfront home isn't determined by the map.
It's determined by the memories you hope to create there.
