As a Boston-area native, I never expected Independence Day in the Florida Keys to feel just as patriotic as it does in Massachusetts—a state proudly known as "The Spirit of America." Yet after more than two decades living in the Keys, I've come to appreciate that the Conch Republic has traditions every bit as meaningful and memorable as those I grew up with.
